Documentation Needed for License Restoration: Gathering Necessary Evidence and Records

November 04, 2025

Getting your driving privileges suspended can feel overwhelming. Work, shopping and many other aspects of daily life are suddenly turned upside down, and it can feel like your independence has been greatly restricted. While there are paths to reinstatement, you may be left dealing with confusing paperwork, deadlines and requirements that aren’t always clear.

At The Bellinger Law Office, we understand the challenges you’re facing. We’re here to help you through them so your license can be restored and your life can get back on track. Here are the documents you may need to successfully restore your license.

Key Documents for License Restoration

Official Driving Record (ODR)

Your Official Driving Record shows all suspensions, reinstatement requirements and fees owed.

How to obtain it: Request a certified copy from the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), which can be printed and includes a letter of certification. The ODR identifies exactly what you need to do for your license restoration.

Why it matters: Without reviewing your ODR first, you might miss critical requirements or pay unnecessary fees.

Court Orders

If your suspension resulted from a court order, the BMV cannot restore your license until the court releases the hold.

What you need to do: Contact the court directly to determine their specific requirements. Each court has different procedures for lifting suspensions. The BMV will only accept documentation directly from the court.

Important notes:

  • You may be able to stay a court-ordered suspension by obtaining SR22 insurance coverage while working with the court.
  • If completing a driver safety course was part of your license restoration requirements, presenting a certification of completion may also be required.

Proof of Insurance

For insurance-related suspensions, your insurance company must submit documentation directly to the BMV.

Certificate of Compliance (COC): If you had valid insurance during the incident, your provider can submit a COC to remove the suspension entirely.

SR22 Insurance: If you cannot prove prior coverage, you will likely need SR22 insurance. Maintaining SR22 coverage for 180 consecutive days without lapses will terminate most insurance suspensions.

Reinstatement Fee Payment Confirmation

Many suspensions require reinstatement fees before restoration. Required fees will be indicated on your ODR.

Payment methods available:

  • Online through your myBMV account
  • By phone
  • By mail
  • At BMV Connect kiosks

Keep your payment confirmation as proof. In some cases, obtaining SR22 insurance for 180 days may eliminate the need for reinstatement fees.

Monitoring Your License Status

Once the process is complete, you should check your ODR regularly through your myBMV account, as license restoration can take time.

You may also need to visit a BMV branch or order a replacement license online once your privileges are restored if law enforcement took your physical license during suspension.
